Champalimaud Foundation (Fundação D. Anna de Sommer Champalimaud e Dr. Carlos Montez Champalimaud), a private, non-profit research institution in Lisbon, Portugal, is looking for a Lab Manager to join our team at the Champalimaud Research Program.

The selected candidate will:

The Cancer Dormancy & Immunity Lab, led by Dr. Ana Luisa Correia, at Champalimaud Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal, is looking for a focused, very organized, driven, and enthusiastic Lab Manager to assist with day-to-day operations. The Cancer Dormancy & Immunity Lab aims to understand tissue-specific mechanisms that regulate breast cancer dormancy, and in finding ways to effectively target dormant cancer cells and prevent metastatic disease. The position offers excellent opportunities for operational management and technical and scientific responsibilities. It is suited for a highly productive and dedicated individual, with a positive can-do attitude, and with lab management experience.

Job Duties

  • Acts as the primary liaison for lab communications and collaborate with Dr. Correia to effectively manage short-term and long-term laboratory requirements.
  • Writes/renews animal protocols and manages lab’s animal colonies.
  • Handles the upkeep of lab reagents, their databases, and handling requests, as well as the maintenance of equipment, infrastructure, and space allocation.
  • Initiates and manages orders, tracking supplies and expenditures, and liaising with vendors while maintaining attention to the sources and uses of grant funds for these needs.
  • Onboards new staff, ensuring training, compliance with lab and institutional guidelines, and supervising technicians and scientists while being able to command the respect.
  • Trains and supervises research assistants' operations tasks and supporting lab team members with various research/experiment-related tasks.
  • Handles financial activities such as monitoring budgets and communicating with Dr. Correia about spending levels and spending patterns.
  • Assists in editing grants, manuscripts, proposals, presentations, and other documents, ensuring deadlines for grant application submissions and progress reports are met.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a Basic Science or related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience, with prior supervisory experience.

Specific Requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree.
  • Previous research experience in cancer biology, immunology or molecular biology.
Previous experience training other people on various protocols. Previous experience with mouse research or human specimens is preferred.
  • Sense of self-motivation, honesty, trustworthiness, collaboration skills, and a passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, adaptability, attention to detail, and strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teamwork abilities.

Desirable skills that will also be considered:

We are looking for candidates with at least 2 years of availability, and preferable commitment for a long-term, stable position.

Required languages:

Strong spoken and written competency in English.

Eligibility criteria

National, Foreign or Stateless candidate(s) who hold a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences Areas or other related scientific areas and a scientific and professional curriculum that reveals a profile appropriate to the activity to be developed.

In case of PhD degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, the degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 341/2007, of 12th of October, and all formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the deadline for application submission.

Selection process

Candidates will be screened to determine eligibility based on minimum qualifications listed in call. Candidates meeting minimum requirements will be scored according to the required application materials: Relative weighting: CV: 40%, motivation letter: 30%, and interview: 30%

If provided, and if shortlisted, candidates’ referees may be contacted and may count towards evaluation.

Notification of results

All candidates will receive a receipt of acknowledgment within 7-10 business days.The highest scoring candidate will be notified by email or telephone. All other candidates will be notified solely by email of the final outcome of the recruitment process.

After being notified, candidates will have 10 working days to present a claim for redress by email (careers@research.fchampalimaud.org). If no claim is received by the Champalimaud Foundation, the Evaluation Committee's decision will become definitive
